California Brown Pelican

Watercolor and colored pencil on watercolor paper, 2023 (approx. 5.5 inches x 7 inches.)

My stint in Southern California included many bouts of sitting by the ocean, asking it what I was to do next. The older I get and the more I learn about myself, the more lost I feel, sometimes. Many a time I would find myself entranced and amused by flocks of brown pelicans coasting by over the blue expanse. They flew steadily in formations, self-assured, using their calls economically, efficiently. Focused. I wanted to be like them in that regard. Still do, I guess.

But even when I’m not in that mode, I find watching them soar soothing. While I’m away from the beloved sea, looking at this rendition will do for me.
