Western Bluebirb

Watercolor, ink, and colored pencil on paper, 9 x 12 inches, 2023

On late afternoon walks (usually with my adored dog nephew) or dusky solo jogs through a protected patch of Southern California land, a streak of blue so electric it’s been impossible for me to recreate even in this painting would cut across the warm, dry foliage around me. I was lucky enough to have the source of this ultramarine streak sit on a nearby post and stare curiously at me a couple of times, and I learned that Western bluebirds were a thing. And not only are they a mystical shade of blue, but they are round, curious wee things, which surely earn them the coveted “birb” Internet designation.

Also, they have the cutest eyes, beaks, and… well, everything. Had to paint one!
